The Zingaro Nature Reserve is located on the western Tyrrhenian coast of Sicily, in the province of Trapani.
Established in 1981 as the first nature reserve in Sicily, it is the most famous protected area on the entire island.
The southern entrance is near the village of Scopello, and the reserve boasts high natural and scenic value. The landscape is characterized by rocky terrain, shrubs, and garrigue vegetation, and it is home to 25 different species of wild orchids, some of which are endemic. The most important plant in the area is the dwarf palm, which was historically used in various ways by the local inhabitants. Among the wildlife, the reserve hosts the Bonelli’s eagle, an endangered bird that nests in this very area.
The trails lead to fascinating historic buildings, now transformed into small museums, offering insight into how past civilizations lived in harmony with their natural surroundings. Within the reserve, there are also secluded coves where visitors can enjoy the crystal-clear waters of Sicily.
The trails are well-maintained, and, like all protected natural reserves, the Zingaro is subject to regulations designed to preserve this extraordinary ecosystem. Entry is allowed only with appropriate outdoor footwear, and pets are not permitted.
