La Favorita is one of the largest urban parks in Italy and the largest green area in Palermo.
The park is integrated into the urban area of the city and serves as a natural divider between the residential neighborhoods and the coastal village of Mondello, famous for its beaches and as the main attraction for seaside tourism in the Sicilian capital.
The park’s history dates back to the Bourbon period, when, during the exile of Ferdinand III from Naples, it was transformed into a hunting estate. Even today, we can admire the buildings constructed for territorial surveillance and the organization of royal hunts.
What remains of the hunting estate is now part of the Monte Pellegrino Nature Reserve, which, together with Palermo’s most famous mountain, forms a protected area.
This route will take you through some of the most scenic wooded areas. Near the summit, you will also have the chance to admire the Sanctuary of Santa Rosalia, the Patron Saint of Palermo.
At the end of your excursion, you can opt for a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters of Mondello.
